MT5 vs MT4: What’s Actually Different for Prop Traders

MT5 offers more timeframes (21 vs 9 in MT4), a built-in economic calendar, more order types including buy stop limit and sell stop limit, and better built-in backtesting. For prop traders, the most practically relevant differences are the expanded order types and the ability to trade more asset classes natively — including stocks and commodities — without MT4’s workarounds.

EA Compatibility

MT4 EAs are not compatible with MT5. If you have a working MT4 EA, moving to MT5 requires a rewrite in MQL5. For traders with existing automated strategies, this is a real migration cost — verify that your tools are available in MT5 before choosing a firm that only supports it.

Execution Quality

MT5’s execution layer is generally regarded as faster than MT4’s, particularly for algorithmic order execution. The native depth-of-market display (DOM) in MT5 provides level-II pricing visibility that MT4 doesn’t offer, which matters for scalpers and high-frequency strategies.

The MT4 Overlap

Most major prop firms support both MT4 and MT5. If a firm offers both, there’s no reason to limit yourself to MT5 — use whatever matches your existing tools. The firms on this list specifically include MT5 as a supported platform; several also support MT4 or cTrader alongside it.
