What Is a Prop Firm?

A proprietary trading firm β€” prop firm β€” provides traders access to capital in exchange for a share of profits. Instead of trading your own money, you trade the firm’s capital and keep a percentage of whatever you make, typically between 70% and 100%.

The modern retail prop firm model works differently from traditional Wall Street prop trading. You pay an entry fee to take a trading evaluation (called a challenge or combine), prove you can trade profitably while respecting specific risk rules, and if you pass, receive a funded account. You keep the fee when you make your first withdrawal.

How Prop Firms Actually Make Money

This is the part most explainers skip. The majority of retail prop firm revenue comes from evaluation fees paid by traders who don’t pass the challenge. Studies suggest that 80-90% of traders fail prop firm evaluations. At $300-500 per attempt, a firm processing thousands of evaluations monthly generates substantial income before a single funded trade is placed.

Successful funded traders also contribute to firm revenue through the profit split β€” the percentage the firm retains. A funded trader making $5,000 per month on an 80/20 split generates $1,000 for the firm each month indefinitely.

This business model is legitimate and transparent at the better firms. The evaluation fee funds the firm’s operations; the profit split funds ongoing returns. Understanding this helps you evaluate which firms are operating sustainably versus which are primarily funded by failed evaluations.

Are Prop Firms Real?

The legitimate ones, yes. FTMO has been paying traders since 2015 and has published payout data showing hundreds of millions of dollars paid out. Topstep has been funding futures traders since 2012. These are real businesses with verifiable histories.

The prop trading space also contains fraudulent operations that collect evaluation fees without ever intending to pay funded traders. Red flags include: no verifiable company registration, no published payout data, terms that make it practically impossible to withdraw, and new firms with no track record offering unusually high splits or unusually low fees.

Types of Evaluations

The standard model is a two-phase evaluation where you hit a profit target in phase one, hit a smaller target in phase two, and receive a funded account. One-step evaluations compress this into a single phase. Instant funded accounts skip the evaluation entirely β€” you pay a premium for immediate capital access but typically receive lower profit splits and tighter rules.

Is a Prop Firm Worth It?

For profitable traders with a consistent strategy and sound risk management: yes, accessing $100K+ in capital for a $300-500 evaluation fee is structurally better than trading a personal account of equivalent size. The leverage on capital is significant.

For traders who haven’t yet demonstrated consistent profitability on their own capital: the prop firm evaluation is likely premature. The rules β€” profit targets, drawdown limits, minimum trading days β€” are calibrated for profitable traders. An unprofitable trader will fail the evaluation, pay the fee, and remain unprofitable. Develop the strategy first.
