Futures Prop Trading Is Different

Futures prop firms operate under different economics than forex prop firms. The instruments are exchange-listed with published prices and standardised tick values, which makes transparent evaluation easier. The risk models tend to reflect this β€” trailing drawdown calculated on end-of-day equity is more common in futures than in forex, and it’s more forgiving than intraday trailing drawdown.

Drawdown Models in Futures

End-of-day trailing drawdown is the most common model among futures prop firms. Your trailing stop ratchets up based on your closing balance each day β€” not your intraday high. This means an intraday spike that you give back before close doesn’t raise your floor. Intraday trailing drawdown, by contrast, moves your floor with every new intraday equity high, which penalises normal intraday volatility and is harder to manage.

Platform Requirements

Most futures prop firms support NinjaTrader and Tradovate β€” the two dominant retail futures platforms. Some also support Rithmic as a data feed for traders who use third-party order execution tools. Sierra Chart users are a smaller but dedicated group; firm support for it is limited but growing.

Multiple Account Policies

Several futures prop firms allow multiple simultaneous funded accounts β€” Apex allows up to 20, Topstep up to 5. This is a meaningful structural advantage for systematic traders who want to scale capital through replication rather than account size growth.
