The Weekend Holding Requirement Is Non-Negotiable

Swing trading inherently involves holding positions over the weekend. Any firm that requires positions closed by Friday end-of-session — including FTMO — eliminates a large portion of swing trading opportunities. The first filter for any swing trader evaluating prop firms is weekend holding: permitted or not. No other factor matters until that one is confirmed.

Minimum Trading Days

A swing trader might legitimately take one trade in a week and hold it for five days. Firms with a 10+ minimum trading days requirement force artificial activity that doesn’t suit a low-frequency, high-conviction approach. Look for firms with no minimum days or a low threshold (4 days or fewer).

Drawdown Type

Static drawdown is substantially better for swing traders than trailing drawdown. A swing position that moves against you temporarily before recovering will eat into a trailing floor permanently — even if the trade ultimately closes profitable. Static drawdown doesn’t penalise temporary adverse movement, which matches the natural volatility of multi-day holds.

Overnight and Weekend Risk

Some firms charge overnight swap fees on positions held through rollover. On a $100K account held over several days, swap costs can be meaningful. Check whether the firm passes through actual swap rates or absorbs them — and factor this into your expected returns.
