What Is a Prop Firm Challenge?

A prop firm challenge β€” also called an evaluation, combine, or assessment β€” is a time-limited trading test on a simulated account that mirrors real market conditions. You’re given a starting balance, a profit target to hit, and a set of risk rules you must respect throughout. If you hit the profit target without breaking any rules, you advance to funding.

The Profit Target

Most evaluations require 8-10% profit in phase one and 4-5% in phase two. On a $100K account, that means making $8,000-10,000 in phase one while respecting all drawdown and daily loss rules simultaneously. The profit target sounds achievable β€” the difficulty is hitting it consistently enough to avoid drawdown violations along the way.

Drawdown Rules

The maximum drawdown limit is the most important rule in any evaluation. It defines how much you can lose from your starting balance (or, in trailing models, from your equity peak) before the account is terminated. Common limits are 10% total drawdown and 5% daily drawdown. These apply simultaneously β€” you can’t use your full 10% budget in a single day.

Daily drawdown resets each day but total drawdown doesn’t. Losing 4% on Monday, 4% on Tuesday leaves you with 2% total budget remaining for the rest of the evaluation β€” even though each individual day was within the 5% daily limit.

Minimum Trading Days

Most two-step evaluations require a minimum number of trading days β€” typically 4-10 β€” before you can pass phase one. This prevents traders from hitting the profit target in a single lucky session. You must show that the performance is repeatable across multiple market conditions.

Other Common Rules

News trading restrictions prevent placing or holding trades during scheduled economic data releases. Weekend holding restrictions require positions closed by end of Friday’s session. Copy trading restrictions prevent mirroring another trader’s signals. EA restrictions limit automated trading strategies. Each firm applies different combinations of these β€” check the specific rules before paying the entry fee.

What Happens When You Pass

After passing all evaluation phases, you sign a trader agreement, receive login credentials for a real or simulated funded account, and begin trading under the same rules but without the profit target pressure. You trade, generate profits, and request a withdrawal β€” typically on a 30-day or bi-weekly schedule. The entry fee is refunded on your first payout at most reputable firms.

Why Most Traders Fail

The three most common failure modes are: (1) a single oversized position that blows through the daily drawdown limit in one trade, (2) revenge trading after losses that compounds drawdown violations, and (3) impatience β€” trying to hit the profit target too quickly by taking larger risks than the rules allow. The evaluation is designed to filter for traders who manage risk consistently, not traders who can hit a profit target once.
